Se Google vuole veramente assestare un colpo pesante a Microsoft dovrebbe integrare la suite OpenOffice con Google Docs e sostenere, in questo progetto, le piccole, medie e grandi imprese. Dato il nome che Google Docs si porta dietro e la qualità di OpenOffice, sarebbe una mossa sicuramente vincente.

OpenOffice è la suite per l’ufficio che fa praticamente tutto ciò che fa Microsoft Office, ma a costo zero. E’ vero, forse mancano alcune funzioni, ma sono dettagli che la gente comune non usa.

Ora immaginate se una suite completa come OpenOffice venisse integrata con il servizo web di Google. Ci sarebbero due vantaggi: prima di tutto gli utenti avrebbero a disposizione tanto spazio offerto da Google, e in secondo piano Google aiuterebbe OpenOffice a crescere, inserendo anche quelle caratteristiche che il software non comprende al momento.

Questo week-end il Papa è in tourné a Genova e si sta allestendo un palco in Piazza Della Vittoria. Peccato che a farne le spese sono stati gli alberi che avevano la colpa di oscurare il palco da cui officerà i suoi riti di massa.

Il grande e largo spartitraffico in via Diaz è diviso in tre sezioni: in quella a est davanti alla questura ho contato 7 alberi tagliati, e 5 nel lato ovest di fronte al Liceo D’Oria. Nella sezione centrale non è dato sapere, perché il prato è stato coperto da un tavolato di legno.

Resta la domanda: ma a che serve ad Apple un negozio su SL ?

On April 17, 2008, the US Patent & Trademark Office published Apple’s patent application titled Enhancing Online Shopping Atmosphere . Apple’s patent generally relates to improving the experiences that online-shoppers may have at an online Apple Store, sometime in the future. While Apple points to the obvious advantages of shopping online, such as being continuously open for business 24/7, allowing consumers to quickly use search functions to find multiple items and of course the best of all, never having to leave the house to shop. However, Apple acknowledges that they have a long way to go before delivering a more interactive experience that could match that found in the real world. Apple’s patent points out that “one drawback of online shopping is that the experience can feel sterile and isolating. Customers in such an environment may be less likely to have positive feelings about the online shopping experience, may be less inclined to engage in the online equivalent of window shopping (e.g., will not linger in front of a display), and may ultimately spend less money than their counterparts who shop in physical stores.”

Microsoft Corp. today announced a set of broad-reaching changes to its technology and business practices to increase the openness of its products and drive greater interoperability, opportunity and choice for developers, partners, customers and competitors.

Specifically, Microsoft is implementing four new interoperability principles and corresponding actions across its high-volume business products: (1) ensuring open connections; (2) promoting data portability; (3) enhancing support for industry standards; and (4) fostering more open engagement with customers and the industry, including open source communities.

“These steps represent an important step and significant change in how we share information about our products and technologies,” said Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer. “For the past 33 years, we have shared a lot of information with hundreds of thousands of partners around the world and helped build the industry, but today’s announcement represents a significant expansion toward even greater transparency. Our goal is to promote greater interoperability, opportunity and choice for customers and developers throughout the industry by making our products more open and by sharing even more information about our technologies.”

Online office suites like Google Docs are often criticized because they have a very basic feature set, but the advanced features from software packages like Microsoft Office are rarely used. Jensen Harris, Group Program Manager of the Microsoft Office User Experience Team, published in 2006 a list of the most used features in Microsoft Word 2003, according to data collected from the users who opted for the Customer Experience Improvement Program:
1. Paste (11% of the usage)
2. Save (5.5% of the usage)
3. Copy
4. Undo
5. Bold
These five commands account for 32% of all the command usage in Microsoft Word 2003, as they are used very often.

Publicly, Google came out against the deal, contending in a statement that the pairing, proposed by Microsoft on Friday in the form of a hostile offer, would pose threats to competition that need to be examined by policy makers around the world.

Privately, Google, seeing the potential deal as a direct attack, went much further. Its chief executive, Eric E. Schmidt, placed a call to Yahoo’s chief, Jerry Yang, offering the company’s help in fending off Microsoft, possibly in the form of a partnership between the companies, people briefed on the call said.

Google’s lobbyists in Washington have also begun plotting how it might present a case against the transaction to lawmakers, people briefed on the company’s plans said. Google could benefit by simply prolonging a regulatory review until after the next president takes office.

In addition, several Google executives made “back-channel” calls over the weekend to allies at companies like Time Warner, which owns AOL, to inquire whether they planned to pursue a rival offer and how they could assist, these people said. Google owns 5 percent of AOL.

Nei Comuni italiani ci sono abbastanza computer ma i servizi informatici sono ancora molto carenti a causa dell’inefficienza. Le tecnologie non mancano, gli uffici sono cablati, ma i servizi offerti online sono ancora poveri e i sistemi sono poco integrati: lo afferma un documento dell’Ocap, Osservatorio sul cambiamento delle amministrazioni pubbliche della Sda Bocconi, i cui risultati sono stati diffusi oggi.

Nel 60% dei Comuni con più di 40.000 abitanti il rapporto tra computer e dipendenti è ormai di uno a uno, il 66,4% ha un sito internet da almeno cinque anni e praticamente in tutti i casi (98,4%) almeno l’edificio principale è cablato, dice il rapporto dell’Università Bocconi.

Non è perciò la dotazione tecnologica il problema che impedisce agli enti locali italiani di sfruttare tutte le potenzialità della rivoluzione informatica, “I veri problemi stanno in un backoffice frammentato, che si riflette in una scarsa integrazione dei processi e in una limitata offerta di servizi on line ai cittadini”, dice lo studio.

Con notevole sfarzo e con la presenza di niente poco di meno che Bill Gates, Microsoft ha presentato la nuova piattaforma di Unified Coomunications, una suite di prodotti di comunicazione integrata e VoIP.

Microsoft Unified Communications comprende Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007; Microsoft Office Communicator 2007, il client per gestire le comunicazioni telefoniche, di IM e video che funziona su PC, telefoni cellulari e browser Web; Microsoft Office Live Meeting, per le videoconferenze; Microsoft RoundTable; un dispositivo per conferenze con una telecamera a 360°.

Per un ente come la Provincia di Savona il costo delle licenze d’uso dei programmi informatici incide notevolmente sul proprio bilancio soprattutto se consideriamo che ogni postazione ha un costo minimo di circa 270 euro. Finora sui tutti i nostri pc era istallato Microsoft Office, il software più diffuso tra gli enti pubblici ma anche il più costoso. Si è deciso perciò di adottare quello che viene definito open source proprio perché un’alternativa a Bill Gates esiste, è quasi gratis e si chiama Open Office, un prodotto con licenza gratuita che può essere scaricato gratuitamente da Internet da qualsiasi utente. La nostra Provincia ha deciso di intraprendere questa strada e questa filosofia e a breve tutti i dipendenti adotteranno questo pacchetto libero.

Il colosso di Redmond ha svelato oggi Office Live Workspace, ribattezzando contestualmente il servizio Office Live come “Office Live Small Business “. Office Live Workspace è “una nuova funzionalità web-based di Microsoft Office che permette agli utenti di accedere ai loro documenti online e condividere i propri lavori con gli altri” nonché sincronizzare tutto con il proprio client desktop. Il nuovo servizio è stato lanciato oggi in beta-testing in lingua inglese, aprendo le registrazioni al programma.
