Le prime esperienze d’uso di Chrome installato via Virtual Box non hanno lasciato impressioni positive. E’ un sistema operativo troppo Google e troppo browser centrico per essere utile a molte persone. Lo stesso discorso può applicarsi al fatto che pare troppo poco flessibile, per lo meno in queste prime versioni disponibili. E pare altri la pensino alla stessa stregua.

The Chrome OS is here — sort of. This week, Google was kind of enough to give the world a sneak peek at its nascent desktop operating system. And after months of speculation (and more than a few bogus screenshot galleries), I can finally say that I’ve seen the future … and it’s not Chrome OS.

The preceding statement should come as no surprise to readers of my Enterprise Desktop blog. I came to a similar conclusion months ago. When news of the existence of a Google OS project first leaked out, I gave it an ice cube’s chance in hell of succeeding. Now, after watching a sometimes touchy-sounding crew from Google’s Mountain View, Calif., headquarters walk us through the ins and outs of the Chrome OS, I’m more convinced than ever that my original assessment was right on the money.

Google’s Chrome OS project, first announced in July, will become available for download within a week, we’ve heard from a reliable source. Google previously said to expect an early version of the OS in the fall.

What can we expect? Driver support will likely be a weak point. We’ve heard at various times that Google has a legion of engineers working on the not so glamorous task of building hardware drivers. And we’ve also heard conflicting rumors that Google is mostly relying on hardware manufacturers to create those drivers. Whatever the truth, and it’s likely in between, having a robust set of functioning drivers is extremely important to Chrome OS’s success. People will want to download this to whatever computer they use and have it just work.

Ha il duro compito di fare dimenticare l’esperienza di Vista e le sue sviste. Carico di grandi aspettative, Windows 7 ha subito una lunga fase di sviluppo che culminerà il 22 ottobre con il rilascio urbis et orbis. In attesa della fatidica data ci siamo «procurati» una versione Rtm (build 7.600), Release to manufacturer, cioè la versione praticamente definitiva distribuita ai produttori di pc e l’abbiamo provata su due computer con potenza e caratteristiche differenti per saggiarne le capacità. Due le installazioni fatte: la Starter sul pc bonsai (un Samsung Nc10 in salsa Vodafone) e la Ultimate su un sistema assemblato a mano con componenti di livello alto ma con tutte le variabili e le cose storte che si producono nel caso di pc autocostruiti. E in fondo il bello di Windows è anche questo: la possibilità di funzionare su un notebook progettato da fior di ingegneri o su un pc assemblato a casa con pezzi presi all’ipermercato. Altri sistemi operativi, più cool e trendy, non possono farlo.

Ora Google lancia il suo progetto di sistema operativo

So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windo

Oggi abbiamo messo in linea l’emulatore di itsme. Esso rappresenta il primo pezzo di software che incorpora parte del concept alla base di itsme (la metafora delle stories and venues) che viene reso disponibile alla comunità delle persone che seguono la nostra avventura con simpatia ed interesse.

I nostri software designers sono già al lavoro sul prototipo del sistema operativo per workstations, che è il nostro obiettivo principale, e nei prossimi mesi metteremo in linea diversi dimostratori basati su di esso, per coinvolgere sempre di più la comunità nel processo di progettazione, mostrandole diversi suoi aspetti e verificando il modo in cui sono accolti. A fine anno, infine, il prototipo completo sarà rilasciato, e qui inizierà una nuova fase del nostro lavoro.
