Gli abbonati Skype italiani che hanno un numero (Skypein) hanno ricevuto una mail con cui sono stati avvertiti che dal 28 agosto non potranno essere garantite le condizioni cui fino ad oggi è stato assicurato il servizio.
Secondo quanto c’è scritto nella missiva, Skype si appoggiava nel nostro paese all’azienda Eutelia che, attualmente in amministrazione controllata, “non sarà più in grado di fornire i numeri con le stesse condizioni e modalità offerte fino ad ora”.
Già da giugno, si nota dal sito di Skype, non è possibile attivare nuovi numeri Skype italiani, quel servizio che consente cioè ad un abbonato del servizio VoIP di ricevere chiamate da un telefono tradizionale appoggiandosi su un numero virtuale.
UPDATE: Eutelia in un comunicato precisa che:
Eutelia S.p.A. in a.s. (ai sensi D.lgs 270/99) smentisce fermamente le notizie apparse in questi giorni a mezzo web originate dalla comunicazione inviata da Skype ai propri clienti sulla possibile sospensione, a partire dal 28 agosto 2011, dei servizi erogati a quest’ultimi attraverso l’utilizzo di numerazioni geografiche di Eutelia.
Le stesse sono erronee, destituite di ogni fondamento e potenzialmente lesive dell’immagine di
Eutelia, infatti:
a) la sospensione dei servizi erogati da Skype non è in alcun modo riconducibile ad Eutelia che ha sempre continuato a garantire a tutti i propri partner commerciali nonché ai propri clienti finali la assoluta qualità e continuità dei propri servizi, anche oltre gli impegni contrattuali;
b) la sospensione dei servizi erogati da Skype ai propri utenti finali è esclusivamente riconducibile ad un recente provvedimento del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico (prot. 59624 del 14 luglio 2011) che ha imposto ad Eutelia la disattivazione delle numerazioni geografiche di cui essa è titolare ed attraverso le quali Skype ha fino ad oggi potuto erogare i servizi agli utenti, non essendosi Skype conformata alla normativa italiana ed alle indicazioni al riguardo da tempo prescritte dal competente Ministero;
c) il provvedimento del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico giunge all’esito di una serie di
segnalazioni precedentemente inviate a Skype, sia dal Ministero che da Eutelia, con le quali infine il Ministero aveva intimato a Skype di conformarsi alla normativa italiana di settore avendo riscontrato delle anomalie relative al servizio in questione; nello spirito di collaborazione di Eutelia e nella volontà di coadiuvare il cliente Skype, Eutelia aveva immediatamente manifestato la propria disponibilità, tuttora attuale, a far sottoscrivere alla stessa un nuovo contratto che recepisse le indicazioni del Ministero: la proposta è ad oggi rimasta tuttavia disattesa da Skype.
d) ove permanesse questa situazione di stallo, come detto in alcun modo imputabile a Eutelia, ed in caso di sospensione dei servizi Skype, Eutelia farà quanto possibile per ridurre al minimo gli eventuali disservizi per l’utenza.
Good news for iPad 2 owners! Skype has released an official version for iPads, so you no longer have to rely on the iPhone app for your video calls. Of course the iPhone app would be a smaller video window, or an odd fullscreen option, but now Skype can be enjoyed on the iPad screen in its full glory.
Skype for iPad supports video calling, audio calling and chat on WiFi or 3G. Of course, in order to get two-way video calling you’ll need an iPad 2, but OG iPad owners will still be able to receive video calls even though they won’t be able to send video. The app also brings all the other features you’d expect in a Skype app, like push notifications for chat and communication histories.

Microsoft Corp. is close to a deal to buy Internet phone company Skype Technologies SA for between $7 billion and $8 billion—the most aggressive move yet by Microsoft to play in the increasingly-converged worlds of communication, information and entertainment.

A deal could be announced as early as Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said, though they cautioned that negotiations aren’t yet final and a deal could still fall apart. Including Skype’s long-term debt, the total value of the deal is about $8.5 billion.

I’m happy to announce that we’ve entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Qik, a provider of mobile video software and services that let people capture, instantly share and preserve great moments on video from anywhere. Qik has 60 employees, and is headquartered in Redwood City, California and has an office in Moscow, Russia. We expect to close the transaction in January 2011.
Qik is available on over 200 mobile phones running Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile, and comes preloaded on a wide variety of mobile handsets through partnerships with handset manufacturers and mobile networks.
Skype and Qik share a common purpose of enriching communications with video, and the acquisition of Qik will help to accelerate our leadership in video by adding recording, sharing and storing capabilities to our product portfolio.
Earlier today, we noticed that the number of people online on Skype was falling, which wasn’t typical or expected, so we began to investigate.
Skype isn’t a network like a conventional phone or IM network – instead, it relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running. Some of these computers are what we call ‘supernodes’ – they act a bit like phone directories for Skype. If you want to talk to someone, and your Skype app can’t find them immediately (for example, because they’re connecting from a different location or from a different device) your computer or phone will first try to find a supernode to figure out how to reach them.
Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype. As Skype relies on being able to maintain contact with supernodes, it may appear offline for some of you.
What are we doing to help? Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes’ as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal.

Solo chi ha figli, mariti, mogli, parenti e amici lontani, semmai dall’altra parte del mondo, può dire come e quanto Skype ha cambiato la loro vita. Skype ha ormai più di sette anni. Dalla prima versione a quella rilasciata pochi giorni fa – la numero 5 – sono stati fatti passi da gigante. All’inizio le video conversazioni erano precarie, con l’audio gracchiante. Sembrava di telefonare dalla luna. Le immagini, poi, andavano a scatti o si frizzavano su pose innaturali. Today we’re pleased to announce we’ve acquired Gizmo5, a company that provides Internet-based calling software for mobile phones and computers. While we don’t have any specific features to announce right now, Gizmo5′s engineers will be joining the Google Voice team to continue improving the Google Voice and Gizmo5 experience. Current Gizmo5 users will still be able to use the service, though we will be suspending new signups for the time being, and existing users will no longer be able to sign up for a call-in number.
We’ve acquired a number of small companies over the past five years, and the people and technology that have come to Google from other places have contributed in many ways, large and small, to all kinds of Google products. Since the GrandCentral team joined Google in 2007, they’ve done incredible things with Google’s technology and resources to launch and improve Google Voice.
Now that they got what they wanted – a renewed stake and board representation in the Skype that will be spun off eBay soon – the Scandinavian duo Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis can divert more of their attention again to the latest Internet venture they’re putting their weight behind: Rdio. The yet-to-launch digital music startup was first talked about publicly a couple of weeks ago in a New York Times article but we haven’t heard any further information about the startup.
