Continua lo shopping di Google: questa è la volta di Gizmo, meno noto competitor di Skype

Today we’re pleased to announce we’ve acquired Gizmo5, a company that provides Internet-based calling software for mobile phones and computers. While we don’t have any specific features to announce right now, Gizmo5’s engineers will be joining the Google Voice team to continue improving the Google Voice and Gizmo5 experience. Current Gizmo5 users will still be able to use the service, though we will be suspending new signups for the time being, and existing users will no longer be able to sign up for a call-in number.

We’ve acquired a number of small companies over the past five years, and the people and technology that have come to Google from other places have contributed in many ways, large and small, to all kinds of Google products. Since the GrandCentral team joined Google in 2007, they’ve done incredible things with Google’s technology and resources to launch and improve Google Voice.

Now that they got what they wanted – a renewed stake and board representation in the Skype that will be spun off eBay soon – the Scandinavian duo Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis can divert more of their attention again to the latest Internet venture they’re putting their weight behind: Rdio. The yet-to-launch digital music startup was first talked about publicly a couple of weeks ago in a New York Times article but we haven’t heard any further information about the startup.

I rumor della Rete, questa volta, sono andati a segno. E proprio il presidente di Skype, Josh Silverman, nel suo post, ufficializza l’acquisizione di Skype da parte di una cordata di investitori.

Ecco cosa dice: ” Oggi per Skype ha inizio un nuovo capitolo. Ci scorporiamo da eBay per diventare ancora una volta, una società indipendente. Questa è una notizia molto eccitante per tutti noi qui a Skype, e voglio dare a tutti voi una breve panoramica di quello che sta succedendo. Un piccolo gruppo di venture capital ha concordato con eBay l’acquisizione di una quota di maggioranza di Skype. Il gruppo è guidato da Silver Lake Partners, uniti da Index Ventures e Andreessen Horowitz. Si possono riconoscere alcuni nomi – per esempio Danny Rimer e Mike Volpi (Index Ventures), che sono stati alcuni dei primi membri del consiglio di amministrazione e fervidi sostenitori di Skype. I nuovi investitori acquisteranno circa il 65% di Skype, con eBay che continuerà a possederne il 35%, con una valutazione di Skype intorno ai 2,75 miliardi dollari US. EBay plans to announce on Tuesday a deal to sell its Skype Internet calling division to a group of private investors, according to two people briefed on the company’s plans.

The investment group is likely to include Andreessen Horowitz, a new venture capital firm headed by the Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, these people said. One of the people added that Index Ventures, a London-based venture capital firm that was an early investor in Skype, and the private equity firm Silver Lake Partners were also involved. A price was not disclosed, but eBay has said it wants around $2 billion for Skype, which is on track to take in more than $600 million in revenue this year.

Alan Marks, an eBay spokesman, would not comment on the matter. Mr. Andreessen is on eBay’s board of directors.

Months after teasing us at CES with an announcement of Skype’s native VoIP client for the iPhone, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday. We got a chance to sit down with the application’s principal engineer before the announcement was made at CTIA 2009, to see Skype for iPhone do its thing. While most of the features aren’t too surprising–Skype does want to maintain some consistency across its mobile applications, after all–there are a few capabilities that are notably missing, and a few iPhone-only perks that are refreshing to see.

In terms of navigation, Skype’s VoIP app for iPhone looks more like your traditional iPhone app than it does Skype 4.0 for Windows. For many who already prefer Apple’s sleek interface archetype, that’s a triumph, but those who enjoy Skype’s branding may feel disappointed.

È stata intercettata due mesi fa dagli uomini della Guardia di finanza di Milano. Al telefono un trafficante di cocaina invita il complice a continuare quella comunicazione usando il software che permette di parlare via Internet. Proprio come ormai da settimane stanno facendo mafiosi, trafficanti di armi e di droga, sfruttatori della prostituzione e piccoli criminali in tutto il paese. Perché le comunicazioni fatte tra due pc attraverso Skype non possono essere in alcun modo intercettate dalla polizia, blindate da uno dei software più misteriosi che ci siano sulla rete e da un meccanismo legale invulnerabile. Per capirsi: se Moggi l’avesse saputo, Calciopoli non ci sarebbe stata.
