The earliest was from  2006; the most recent was published last month. More than half of his  subjects were Nobel laureates.<\/p>\n<p>I began contacting these writers and their representatives.  As of this  afternoon:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/01\/12\/NZ_04_MORI.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/01\/12\/NZ_04_MORI.html\" target=\"_blank\">Toni Morrison<\/a> denies ever having spoken to  Debenedetti.<\/li>\n<li><a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2007\/06\/13\/NZ_12_DOCO.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2007\/06\/13\/NZ_12_DOCO.html\" target=\"_blank\">E. L. Doctorow<\/a> told me that the language and, in  particular, the imagery, attributed to him are \u201cimpossible.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Philip Roth was amused to hear that Debenedetti had published a <a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2009\/01\/20\/NZ_03_CENT.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2009\/01\/20\/NZ_03_CENT.html\" target=\"_blank\">second interview<\/a> with him, from 2009.<\/li>\n<li><a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2009\/09\/30\/GO_29_CENT.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2009\/09\/30\/GO_29_CENT.html\" target=\"_blank\">Gunter Grass<\/a> \u201chas a good memory,\u201d his German  editor, Helmut Frielinghaus, told me by e-mail, yet he cannot recall  Debenedetti. And Frielinghaus reads all of Grass\u2019s interviews but never  saw this one before.<\/li>\n<li><a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2006\/05\/31\/NZ_12_GARG.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2006\/05\/31\/NZ_12_GARG.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nadine Gordimer<\/a>, according to her literary agent,  could not recognize her own voice.<\/li>\n<li>The wife of <a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/01\/28\/NZ_28_CENT.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/01\/28\/NZ_28_CENT.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Marie Gustave Le Cl\u00e9zio<\/a> told me that it was  \u201cextremely improbable\u201d that her husband had ever spoken with Debenedetti  or expressed the opinions attributed to him. (Le Cl\u00e9zio was alleged to  have deplored the proposed French ban on the burqa in public buildings.)   \u201cIt sounds crazy,\u201d she said.<\/li>\n<li>A publicist for <a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/02\/10\/NZ_23_APRE.html_1&quot;;return  this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/ricerca.gelocal.it\/ilpiccolo\/archivio\/ilpiccolo\/2010\/02\/10\/NZ_23_APRE.html\" target=\"_blank\">Herta M\u00fcller<\/a> said that the reclusive Romanian-born  writer almost never speaks to journalists, and certainly did not give an  interview to Debenedetti.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"entry-more\">\n<p>A. B. Mazzena Lona told me that he  had  learned about the fabrications only half an hour before my call,  from one of his colleagues, with whom I had just spoken.<\/p>\n<p>Mazzena Lona said he met Tommaso Debenedetti several years ago.
