The document was entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/History\/1989\/proposal.html\"><em>Information Management: A Proposal<\/em><\/a>. And so the web was born.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/info.cern.ch\/hypertext\/WWW\/TheProject.html\">first website at CERN<\/a> \u2013\u00a0and in the world \u2013\u00a0was dedicated to the World Wide Web project itself. Last April CERN initiated a <a href=\"http:\/\/first-website.web.cern.ch\/\">project to restore the first website<\/a>, and to bring back the spirit of that time through its technical innovation and the founding principles of openness and freedom.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 1993 CERN <a href=\"http:\/\/home.web.cern.ch\/topics\/birth-web\/licensing-web\">put the World Wide Web software in the public domain<\/a>. CERN made the next release available with an open licence, as a more sure way to maximise its dissemination.
