With the success of the iTunes App Store and the launch of the Mac App Store, it seems clear that the long term future of software sales is going to be digital distribution. Based on what we’ve heard, however, Apple is planning on making the move to all digital sooner than expected at their retail stores. Apple is working towards eliminating boxed software and presumably focusing sales through the Mac App Store.
Apple’s recent plans to start offering Personal Setup for Mac seems to be in line with that goal.

When you purchase a Mac at an Apple Retail store an employee will help you setup your e-mail accounts, walk you through the Mac App Store, setup an iTunes account for you, and show you the basic pointers of owning a Mac. Some stores will even have dedicated Mac setup stations.
New Mac customers will be walked through how to use their Mac and also how to obtain new software through the Mac App store.

Boxed software also takes up retail space that could be used for higher profit items such as iPad or iPhone accessories. It’s not clear how Apple will deal with prominent titles such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop which aren’t yet available through the Mac App Store.

People say that if you want to become a journalist you have to blog or use Twitter – to show to the world that you have something to say, and that you are desperate to get it out there. Well, that’s old news. Now, if you want to become a journalist you need to be able to code.

There is a certain logic to this. Up until now, as a journalist you worked with information, researching facts and figures which then you passed on to the reader. However, in a digital world there are more platforms you can use to convey that information – think of maps or mobile applications, augmented reality. And to be able to do that you will have know how to code.

In fact, more and more younger journalists code or are starting to learn how to do it. The trend was first spotted by Ryan Tate for Gawker, and he listed Nick Bilton and Jennifer 8 Lee of the New York Times, Taylor Buley of Forbes and the novelist Elizabeth Spiers among others, with most of them learning or coding Python, the key programming language used at Google.

Coding for them is simply a way to hand out the information in the best way possible, and can sometimes lead to a multimillion-pound venture.

Better Software è la prima conferenza Italiana dedicata allo sviluppo di software e rivolta a imprenditori e manager del settore.

L’evento è rivolto ad una varietà eterogenea di argomenti legati alla produzione di software: dalla raccolta delle specifiche al design, dal project management allo sviluppo, dal licensing al marketing.

Better Software si svolgerà a Firenze il 6 e 7 Maggio 2009.

Durante la parte finale della presentazione torinese del libro di MCC e di Franco Giacobazzi si accennava al solito alla nota e notoria arretratezza delle risorse ict e di rete delle Pmi e non solo in Italia. Il problema ha radici antiche storiche e culturali, ma le sue cause prime sono legate all’oggettiva arretratezza dell’informatica italiana che alle origini dei computer era di qualità internazionale.

Poi si è assisitito a un silenzioso omicidio dell’informatica sperimentale dei tempi, si è dovuti ripartire quasi da zero, in un ambiente ostile, in un contesto molto più orientato all’intralazzo commerciale che alla ricerca di nuove soluzioni. Gli informatici di grido sono stati per troppo tempo commercianti piuttosto che sviluppatori.

Lo sviluppo del software open source e del free sotware ha creato una nuova generazione di informatici dinamici, creativi, integrati, competenti, seri che stanno colmando il gap culturale, ma oramai siamo nella coda dell’Europa. Siamo un paese di consumatori di informatica, non un paese che produce informatica.

E in un paese del genere con poca cultura è difficile che si diffonda un humus che diffonda la voglia di innovare nelle PMI attraverso gli strumenti dell informatica e di internet o del furoreggiante web 2.0.

Per ora si continua a fare molte parole, ma nel concreto si realizza poco per essere un paese da G8.

We have some very big news today at Pownce. We will be closing the service and Mike and I, along with the Pownce technology, have joined Six Apart, the company behind such great blogging software as Movable Type, TypePad and Vox. We’re bittersweet about shutting down the service but we believe we’ll come back with something much better in 2009. We love the Pownce community and we will miss you all.

We’re very happy that Six Apart wants to invest in growing the vision that we the founders of Pownce believe so strongly in and we’re very excited to take our vision to all of Six Apart’s products. Mike and I have joined Six Apart as part of their engineering team and we’re looking forward to being a part of the talented group that has created amazing tools for blogging and publishing.

Ziff Davis, the tech/gaming media company that recently exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is now taking the brave but inevitable step of closing down the print version of PCMag to focus its energy on its growing PCMag online network of sites, led by flagship PCmag.com. The magazine, which was started in 1982, has a storied history, but its print base eroded over the years as its core brand of journalism—news you can use while shopping for computers—moved online. It cut back from bi-weekly to monthly earlier this year. PCMag, which literally invented the idea of comparative hardware and software reviews, at one time during the ‘80s averaged about 400 pages an issue, with some issues breaking the 500- and even the 600-page marks, according to this Wikipedia history.

Progetti come questo del Museo Tattile Statale Omero, coodinato dal Professor Luca Spalazzi, hanno una valenza doppia: regalare internet e l’uso del computer anche a chi normalmente non potrebbe fruirne e dimostrare nello stesso momento quanto possano essere valide iniziative che utilizzano solo software aperto e gratuito. Infatti in questo modo ciascuno può collaborare modificando e perfezionando il codice ed aggiungendo funzionalità, senza aver a che fare con vincoli restrittivi nell’uso di tecnologie proprietarie, nè (peggio ancora) dover pagare le licenze per l’uso delle medesime. Dal 25 ottobre, in concomitanza con il Linux Day 2008, potrete scaricare da questo sito a visibilità aumentata, la versione definitiva di Educational Bright Ubuntu che, facendo uso di tecnologie text2speak (TTS) ed altri accorgimenti facilitanti nell’interfaccia visuale e nella gestione degli input , permetterà anche ai non vedenti di navigare in internet e farsi leggere dal computer i contenuti desiderati.

L’associazione no profit Eldy, che si occupa di inclusione sociale degli anziani e disabili con l’italianissimo software gratuito “Eldy – il PC facile” e che annovera oltre 150mila utenti in Italia, annuncia l’uscita di Eldy versione 2.0 per il prossimo 12 ottobre.

Eldy 2.0, completamente gratuito e senza contenuti pubblicitari, mutua il concetto originale di Eldy (semplicità e usabilità), ponendo l’ utente al centro della comunità e fornendo nuove funzionalità (si scarica presso ).

On September 27, 1983, Richard M. Stallman announced his intention to found the GNU project in order to build a free operating system. Now, 25 years later, the Free Software Foundation is marking the anniversary of the announcement with a month-long celebration. Looking back at the last quarter century, Stallman expresses some guarded satisfaction with the growth of the free software movement, but also some bemusement about how it has grown more complex as it has faced new challenges from within and without, and an awareness of how far it still has to go to reach its goals.

As Stallman remembers events, the GNU project started small, with “something like three, maybe four” developers besides himself. “But, once we started to release programs that people could use, that attracted more developers.”

Stallman has written and discussed many times how he started the GNU project out of his growing concern over the rise of proprietary software, starting with a compiler and moving on to GNU Emacs, the program with which he is most closely associated. Originally, he says, “Our emphasis was on recruiting people to write free software. We didn’t even have the core of a system, so the challenge was to write that. But it was written in the absence of any attempt to stop us. It was simply a task of programming.”
