This is a long way from where we are today. The current technology—in this case the distinguished newspaper you are now reading—may be relatively old, but it is a model of simplicity and speed compared with the online news experience today. I can flip through pages much faster in the physical edition of the Journal than I can on the Web. And every time I return to a site, I am treated as a stranger.

So when I think about the current crisis in the print industry, this is where I begin—a traditional technology struggling to adapt to a new, disruptive world. It is a familiar story: It was the arrival of radio and television that started the decline of newspaper circulation. Afternoon newspapers were the first casualties. Then the advent of 24-hour news transformed what was in the morning papers literally into old news.

Now the Internet has broken down the entire news package with articles read individually, reached from a blog or search engine, and abandoned if there is no good reason to hang around once the story is finished. It’s what we have come to call internally the atomic unit of consumption.

Google: cinque click gratis, il sesto si paga

Google cede agli editori Usa e si inventa una curiosa formula di gestione degli accessi ai siti di news. Ora tutti si chiedono che farà l’utente quando avrà esaurito la quotidiana razione di click su di un sito: passerà a pagare o passerà a un altro sito  ?

Alla fine ha vinto Murdoch. Google si arrende: gli scrocconi del web dovranno fermarsi dopo cinque articoli, addio alle notizie gratis. L’annuncio è arrivato ieri da un blog di Google proprio mentre a Washington lui, SuperRupert, discuteva davanti alla Federal Trade Commission del futuro dei giornali e di Internet e la trattativa del mega-accordo in vista tra News Corp e Bing di Microsoft subiva una prima battuta d’arresto.

La guerra delle notizie era scoppiata qualche settimana fa. Il più grande imprenditore della comunicazione al mondo aveva aperto le ostilità: Google non può continuare a pubblicare i contenuti dei giornali senza metterci un dollaro. L’ha ripetuto ancora ieri a Washington: “I creatori dei contenuti sopportano tutti i costi, gli aggregatori godono dei benefici. E questo, nel lungo termine, è insostenibile”. Ma quel termine non sarà evidentemente così lungo.

Arianna Huffington used her 25 minutes at the FTC’s How Will Journalism Survive The Internet Age? conference to take News Corp  CEO Rupert Murdoch and his executives to task for their remarks comparing news aggregators to “parasites,” “tech tapeworms,” and “thieves:” “Apparently, some in the old media have decided that it is, in fact, an either/or game and that the best way to save, if not journalism, at least themselves, is by pointing fingers and calling names,” she said. “In most industries, if your customers were leaving in droves, you would try to figure out what to do to get them back.”
